The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court Thursday awarded a life sentence to an Agribank official for siphoning off VND21 billion (then $1 million) from the lender in 2011-2012.
Nguyen Thanh Nhan, 36, deputy head of marketing at the bank’s Binh Thanh branch in HCMC, was guilty of “stealing property”, the court said.
Nhan, who had been tasked with supervising refilling of ATMs in Binh Thanh District, stole money regularly when it was transported the money from the bank to ATMs.
This continued until a surprise check in October 2012 found huge shortfalls at four ATMs.
Nhan confessed to the police that he had used the money to bet on soccer games and cockfights in Cambodia.
Several other bank officials were convicted for “negligence, causing serious consequences.”
Ly Sy Hanh, the branch’s former director, and his deputy Bui Thi Som each got two years’ probation.
Pham Thi Thanh Huong, a former deputy director who had approved Nhan’s requests to refill ATMs on the phone, got eight years in jail.
Two other officials under Huong also were also sentenced to jail: Do Huu Khuong got two years, four months and 21 days and Dinh Thi Thu Ngan got 18 months.
