Police in central Vietnam on Friday said they are considering legal actions against a local man for allegedly abusing his wife, who is now suffering from severe burns after a failed self-immolation.
The 28-year-old woman, whose name has not been revealed, was rushed to a local hospital on Thursday morning with burns all over her body, doctors said. While she is no longer in a critical condition, it may take a long time before she completely recovers.
Police said she reportedly told her husband not to gamble, which prompted him to chase after her, beating her repeatedly on Wednesday night.
At the climax of the abuse, the husband doused a pile of clothes in her room with gasoline, threatening to set the house on fire.
The wife stayed silent. But early the next morning, when everyone in her family was still sleeping, she locked her room and set the clothes on fire to burn herself.
The husband, who was sleeping in another room, discovered the fire soon after that. He took his two children out of the house, calling his neighbors to help.
Neighbors told police that the husband had repeatedly beaten his wife, forcing her to flee from her house many times before the suicide attempt.
