Under the plan, the Asia-Pacific Gateway cable, which is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2011, will help link ten economies including Japan, South Korea, China and Singapore.
It will also act as a backup for current undersea cables.
Other companies that have joined the project include Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp., China Telecom, China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd., Chunghwa Telecom Co., South Korea’s KT Corp., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and Telekom Malaysia Bhd.
