“No place has been as significant to me as here in Vietnam,” Carter told volunteers, staff and government officials. “We had a very unfortunate relationship with Vietnam... and to see this healing process is an emotional experience for me.”
His campaign, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, which works alongside international housing charity organization Habitat for Humanity, has attracted about 3,000 volunteers from 30 countries to build and repair homes in Thailand, Vietnam, China, Cambodia and Laos – all countries along the Mekong River.
Around 400 local and international volunteers have been working alongside locals in Dong Xa this past week to build 32 homes, each costing around VND100 million (US$5,600).
The Carters have devoted one week every year for the last 26 years for projects run by Habitat for Humanity. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has built more than 300,000 homes worldwide. Since 2001, its chapter in Vietnam has built 4,000 houses.
