Under a decision effective November 13, the sidewalks on 272 streets in the city can be used for parking and business activities. Parking will also be allowed near the curb of 73 other streets.
Monthly fees will range from VND1,000 per square meter in suburban Can Gio District to VND46,000 in central districts like District 1. The city estimated it could earn nearly VND43 billion (US$2.4 million) annually by renting sidewalks and road space.
The city has so far banned the use of sidewalks for commercial purposes completely. However, many people have taken over sidewalks despite the ban, forcing pedestrians into the streets.
