Eight Chinese and four Myanmarese sailors were on the Lucky Dragon carrying some 2,300 tons of iron from China to Ho Chi Minh City when one of its engines broke down, making it drift towards the coast on Monday night, Tran Van Long, director of Da Nang Maritime Search and Rescue Co-ordination Center (MRCC) told the newswire.
MRCC then received the 3,000-ton ship’s S.O.S, but the rescue team couldn’t approach the site until 15 hours later due to rough seas caused by typhoon Mirinae which made its landfall on the central coast the same day.
All the crew members are recovering after receiving first aid, except for one who has been sent to a local hospital due to fatigue, the report said.
The ship, meanwhile, is sinking off the coast of the city’s Son Tra peninsula, posing the threat of an oil spill, the newswire added.
