Prices of consumer goods usually advance during the week-long holiday in Vietnam.
Though the Lunar New Year is four months ahead, the HCMC People’s Committee announced it would provide the loans to the 13 food suppliers so they can store commodities and stabilize market prices.
The city administration has asked the retailers not to increase the price of essential goods, including cooking oil, eggs, meat, sugar and rice, over Tet.
The suppliers were also asked to sell fruit and vegetables at a 5-10 percent discount. This is the first time HCMC included these commodities in its Tet price stabilization policy as authorities saw an increasing demand for them last Tet.
The city’s Department of Industry and Trade forecast consumer spending this year would rise 30 percent from last year.
