The girl’s mother, 41-year-old Nguyen Thi My Le from Mekong Delta’s An Giang Province, has been charged with “arranging statutory rape” over the incident, prosecutors said.
Le allegedly offered her daughter, identified only as N.T.D.N, to Nguyen Van An in 2007 in exchange for VND50 million (US$3,000).
HCMC’s District 3 police said An had promised the girl’s parents he would raise her, provide her with an education and hand over another VND20 million (US$1,250) after he married her.
Le reported the case to police after An drove the teenage girl out of his house following three months living together and refused to make the second payment.
The marriage never took place.
Le and An will be put under house arrest pending further investigations, police said.
