Workers at garment firms continue pay dispute
Nearly 3,500 workers at two Ho Chi Minh City garment companies, both backed by the same Hong Kong investor, continued their strike on Wednesday even though their employers agreed to a “temporary” salary increase.

Workers at Kollan Company and Hugo Company, in Thu Duc District’s Linh Trung Export Processing Zone, refused to return to work because the extra VND100,000 (US$6) had been promised only on a temporary basis.

Kollan Company employees walked off the job last Saturday, demanding higher wages, fewer extra working hours and better quality meals.

The employees said Kollan usually required them to work between 70 and 80 hours of overtime each month.

On Monday, workers at the nearby Hugo Company also walked out, after their claims were endorsed by trade union leaders as reasonable.

On Wednesday, the two companies announced they had decided to stop asking staff to work overtime on Saturdays.

The employers also said they would raise the per-person meal value to VND8,000 ($0.48) from VND6,500 ($0.40) and temporarily increase monthly incomes by VND100,000.

But the workers still refused to return to work, saying the salary increase should be permanent.

Cu Phat Nghiep, the Vietnamese trade union head for Taiwanese footwear company Pouyen in Binh Tan District, said the company decided to raise the monthly wage of VND1.7 million ($102) by 10 percent next month.

Inflation in Vietnam was 25 percent in May.

Footwear company Freetrend Industrial Company in Linh Trung Export Processing Zone said it would increase each worker’s monthly wage by VND100,000 from next month.
