Trong told the central government’s anti-corruption committee to coordinate closely with the northeastern province to address violations on a working visit to Quang Ninh Monday.
“Rampant coal smuggling must be tackled seriously to boost the people’s confidence,” Trong told local leaders.
Meeting with the deputy PM Monday, the provincial Communist Party Committee secretary Nguyen Duy Hung said there would be no “forbidden zone” for investigators.
Hung, whose iron-hand anti-smuggling policy earned him death threats from smugglers, also proposed to Trong that thegovernment adopt a strategy to ensure the sustainable development of the coal industry.
Authorities from the country’s major coal mining area have been plagued by illegal coal mining and export to China this year.
They have closed over 800 illegal mining sites and are investigating 14 suspects for smuggling coal and faking VAT invoices to legalize the origins of smuggled or illegally mined coal.
