Gamblers’ drowning deaths “unexpected”: cops
Police raided a gambling den in this house two weeks ago. Five gamblers were drowned while attempting to escape
The police are not to blame for the unexpected drowning deaths of five people in Ha Tay Province during a raid on a gambling den two weeks ago, a central police official told the media in Hanoi Thursday.

Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Vu Viet Phang, chief of the team investigating the deaths, said the gamblers’ escape attempt and drowning in a nearby lake were unexpected.

The raid, carried out by the central police, had been in accordance with procedures, he added.

The central police said autopsies were being done on the five to pin-point the cause of death.

They added there was no evidence that the gambling den had had protection from the local police.

Over 70 officers raided a farmhouse belonging to Nguyen Dinh The in Tam Hiep Commune, rounding up 56 people who were gambling.

The owner and his wife, Hoang Thi Ban, managed to escape.

The five deceased men were Nguyen Van Manh, Tang Huu Huan, Vu Van Can, Nguyen Huu Tam, and Khuat Ngoc Tuan.
