US$700,000 World Cup bookmakers face criminal charges
Le Cong Hai
Vietnamese police are seeking criminal charges against 19 people involved in an illegal football-betting ring in Ho Chi Minh City, with total stakes during World Cup 2006 estimated at over US$700,000.

The 19, including ringleader Le Cong Hai, an assistant manager at a restaurant in the city, are facing charges of “organizing gambling” and “gambling”.

They were caught red-handed either taking bets or betting in July last year at a den in district 2 and police seized $100,000 in cash at the scene, eight expensive automatic motorbikes, a Mercedes along with mobile phones and computers.

The arrests came minutes before the World Cup final game between Italy and France kicked off.

Gambling is generally illegal in Vietnam but the country is considering legalizing football betting.
