The Southern Hydrometeorological Center reported late Sunday that the typhoon, the sixth to hit Vietnam this year, was at 16.5N0-122.6E0 and 60km east of the Luzon Island (Philippines) with gales of 167-201kph.
The storm is expected to continue moving northwesterly at 15kph over the next 24 hours, and warnings have been issued to all seafaring vessels in the area.
The US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said late Sunday the typhoon would leave Luzon Island early Monday and head for the East Coast.
The British Tropical Storm Risks center predicted the typhoon would weaken as it hit central Vietnam, possibly Quang Ngai province, on November 1.
But data supplied by the JTWC still graded the storm as a “super” typhoon.
As a result of the storm, Vietnam’s central highlands and southern provinces are expected to see night time rain storms.
Heavy rains are also expected to lash the Mekong Delta region.
Fishing boats in affected regions are advised against not to put to sea in the face of deteriorating weather.
