Earthquake rocks southern Vietnam
An earthquake which struck southern Vietnam midnight Monday could have measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, the country’s top seismologist said.

Director of the Global Physics Institute Nguyen Ngoc Thuy said the quake occurred 100km off the coast of Vung Tau and could have measured 4.5 to 5 at the epicenter.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the worst hit area due to its proximity to the epicenter, experienced two tremors within 5 minutes.

In HCMC, locals said they felt one tremor at 00.15 Tuesday.

The earthquake rocked Phan Thiet town of Binh Thuan province badly, sending furniture tumbling, and cups and dishes flying.

Thousands of students at the HCMC University of Transportation frantically ran out of their boarding houses and did not return for a long time.
