95 killed on Vietnam roads during New Year holiday

A total of 95 Vietnamese people were killed and 81 others injured in 117 traffic accidents across the country during the New Year holiday.

Figures from the Road and Railway Police Department showed that only one of the accidents occurred on the railway, killing one person, while all others on the roads, news website VnExpress reported.

As the New Year's Day fell on Sunday, people had a three-day vacation from Saturday, December 31, to Monday, January 2.

Police issued more than 43,000 traffic violations during the period, imposing more than VND13 billion (more than US$618,000) in cash fines.

During a similar vacation for the National Independence Day, 139 people were killed and 111 others injured in traffic accidents.
