A court in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu on Friday handed down prison sentences to nine gang members for "illegally keeping and using military weapons" and "extorting the property of others."
Thach Quang, 44, the ringleader, was sentenced to six years in prison, while his cohorts received sentences between six and 45 months.
According to the indictment, the gang was in involved with gambling and threatened local shrimp farmers with guns and other weapons in order to extort money from them.
In March of last year, one of the farm owners filed complaints with local agencies, accusing Quang's gang of continuously threatening his family.
Between May 17 and 26 that same year, police raided the homes of alleged gang members and found three guns, one grenade and 74 bullets, along with several knives and other weapons.
