Police in the northern city of Hai Phong Saturday seized nearly 1.4 kilograms of heroin from nine people they arrested.
The nine, eight of them women including gang leader Nguyen Thi Thu, 45, a local, were traveling in a car from nearby Hoa Binh Province when they were taken in.
They have been identified as part of a major gang that trafficks drugs between the two places and which the Hai Phong police had kept under surveillance for a long time.
Investigations are continuing.
Vietnam has some of the world's toughest drug laws. Those convicted of smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty.
