8 injured as bus crashes into motorbikes on HCMC overpass

Eight people were injured after a bus crashed into seven motorbikes on an overpass in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
The Phuong Trang bus was traveling on Cay Go Overpass in District 11 when its tire broke at around 7:15 a.m. The vehicle plunged into the street barrier and crashed into the flow of motorbikes traveling on the opposite lane.
Some motorbikes were crushed and thrown onto the barrier.
Eight people were injured, including a woman who was thrown out of the overpass’s handrail and fell into the ground some 4-5 meters below, sustaining severe injuries.
Nearby residents rushed the injured people to hospital. As of press time, four of the eight injured were discharged from hospital.
The bus driver fled the scene but turned himself to police later.
Police are investigating the crash.

UPDATE: Sources told Thanh Nien that the driver of the bus did not flee the scene after the crash. They said he actually carried a 16-month-old victim to a hospital in District 1 before going to see the police.

Doctors at Children’s Hopsital No.1 said they admitted the girl, who was critically injured, at 7:45 a.m.

The driver told them that he saw the girl lying on the street, got a xe om motorbike taxi, and brought her straight to the hospital.

Her condition is still critical, doctors said.
