A careening truck swept 13 people down a mountainside in the northern province of Cao Bang Sunday

Seven people were killed and nine injured Sunday when a container truck plowed into a crowd that had gathered at the site of an earlier accident in the northern mountain province of Cao Bang, Vietnam News Agency reported on Monday.

According to witnesses, the truck was coming at high speed down a mountain pass in Quoc Toan Commune, Tra Linh District, when its driver saw the crowd and slammed the brakes.

The container overturned, sweeping many people over a precipice, while the cab ran over four.

Four people died on the spot, while the others succumbed in hospital, related agencies said.

The deadly accident occurred when people were watching or trying to rescue the driver of another truck who was stuck in the vehicle's cab after it plunged into the abyss earlier.

The police are investigating.
