7 dead, 2 injured after truck hits motorbikes in Vietnam's central highlands

Seven people, including four children, were killed and two injured when a truck crashed into three motorbikes in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on Saturday.

Initial information from local police was that Tran Van Vinh, 28, was overtaking another truck when he ran into three motorbikes going in the opposite direction. The accident happened some 200 meters from the Bao Loc Mountain Pass in Da Huoai District.

The collision killed five of eight people riding the bikes on the spot. Two others succumbed later at a local hospital, while the last victim is treated for serious injuries.  

Vinh was also slightly injured after his truck went off the road after hitting the motorbikes.He was transporting vegetables from the resort town of Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City.

Later he was taken into two-month custody for allegedly violating regulations on road traffic, according to online newspaper Vietnamnet.

Speaking to Thanh Nien, Nguyen Quy My, chairman of Da Huoai, said local rescue teams were trying to retrieve the truck which had plunged about 100 meters down a hill.

Related agencies are investigating the case further, he said.

According to the National Traffic Safety Committee, from February 9-14, Vietnam's Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, traffic accidents left 234 people dead and 301 others injured nationwide.  

Road accidents kill some 11,000 people in Vietnam every year, the 11th highest traffic deaths in the world.
