6 teenage boys arrested for gang rape of minor girl in northern Vietnam

Police in the northern province of Lao Cai Wednesday arrested six teenage boys for the alleged rape of a minor girl.

Four of them held her while the other two raped her, the 14-year-old victim, only identified as N.T.Tr., told the police.

She said Nguyen Nguyen Phong, 17, a friend, had invited her to a party on Sunday and plied her with too much wine. She found a room to rest, but was soon surrounded by the boys.

Pham Ngoc Ky, 16, and Tran Tien Loi, 18, raped her while Phong, Tran Duc Vuong, 17, Tran Ngoc Son, 17, and Ha Van Hung, 17, pinned her down.

The police also arrested three other 17-year-old boys from the party who had been watching and applauding, including the girl's boyfriend Nguyen Minh Quyet.

Tr. said the boys then sent her home in a taxi.

The police are investigating further.

Raping a 14-year-old faces jail term of seven to 15 years.

It could go up to 20 years, life, or even death for gang rape. However, the maximum sentence in Vietnam for offenders under 18 is 18 years.
