Police in the north central province of Thanh Hoa are investigating a case in which six pistols went mysteriously missing from a local prison last Friday, online newspaper VnExpress reported.
Colonel Tran Van Thuc, a spokesman for the Thanh Hoa Police Department, said six Type 54 pistols disappeared from the Thanh Phong Prison guard's office without a trace on Friday evening.
No security breach or attempted jailbreak was reported at the time of the disappearance.
The Thanh Phong Prison in Nong Cong District has always been kept under strict security, Thuc said, adding that this is the most serious weapons heist the province has seen in years.
Police initially assumed someone snuck into the room to steal the pistols.
Do Quang Thao, the chief guard at Thanh Phong Prison, declined to comment.
