An army sappers unit said it successfully deactivated a 500-kilogram bomb from the Vietnam War in the central province of Ha Tinh Sunday.

The bomb had been detected Friday by workers who were clearing the site for a water supply project in Ky Anh District, Nguyen Van Thai, chief of the Brigade of Engineers 414's bomb disarmament division, stationed in nearby Nghe An Province, said.

It had been found some two meters below the ground, he said.

It took the engineers three hours to defuse the bomb, he said, adding it has been removed to be destroyed later.
