The Vietnam's Overseas Labor Department Friday said it was cooperating with the Vietnamese embassy in Russia to learn more about recent arrest by the Russian police' of nearly 500 Vietnamese workers.
It appears that the workers had immigrated into Russia long time ago and were illegally residing there, said a department official who did not want to be named.
However, he said, in case the workers are identified as having been sent by labor recruitment companies, the latter will be asked to act to protect them.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, which manages the department, has ordered Vietnam's labor recruiters which have sent workers to Russia to review and report on their circumstances.
Previously, on Thursday, the RIA Novosti newspaper reported that the 500 workers of a garment factory in Malakhovka Village, Moscow Region, were arrested for numerous immigration law violations.
The police are still looking for the factory's owner, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
