5 Vietnam officials arrested for embezzling paramilitary training funds, traffic fines

Police in the south-central province of Binh Thuan Saturday arrested two senior officials accused of embezzling money meant for training local paramilitary forces.
They are Vo Van Hoang, deputy chief of the Cho LauTtown Party unit and Nguyen Van Lai, head of the town’s military unit.
They would be in custody for four months for questioning and investigation of accusations that they misappropriated “dozens of millions of dong” from a fund meant for training paramilitary forces, the police said.
Hoang is accused of embezzling money in 2011-2012 when he was head of the military unit, and Lai, his successor, in 2013.
On March 7 the police announced the launch of an investigation of three other officials, Huynh Thai Khang, chairman of the Cho Lau People’s Committee, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy, former head of its financial section, and Dam Thi Thanh Truc, its accountant,for abuse of power.
Thuy is Hoang’s wife.
The three have been placed under home arrest.
According to investigators, Khang instructed Thuy and Truc to embezzle nearly VND200 million (US$9,370) collected as traffic fines in 2013.
Khang has also been suspended pending the investigation.
