A court in the central province of Thua Thien – Hue Tuesday sentenced five men to jail for running a file-sharing website that hosted 11.3 million pornographic files.
The men, who were convicted for “spreading perverted content,” got terms ranging from nine months to three and half years, the Ho Chi Minh City police department’s news website reported.
They included Nguyen Duc Nhat, 32, who created the website ryushare.com as an online storage in March 2012 and earned over VND152 billion (US$7 million) by the time he was arrested in April last year.
The site allowed its members to store and share files for free. Those who wanted better speeds and larger storage space had to pay a minimum of 9.96 euros (US$10.8) a month to acquire so-called VIP membership.
Anyone introducing a new VIP member could earn 60 percent of the fee as commission, which resulted in many members uploading porn photos and films to lure people in, according to the indictment.
Prosecutors said the site had nearly 803,900 members, including foreigners, nearly 10 percent of whom were VIP members.
Online payment processing company OnePAY, with whom Nhat had a contract, collected nearly VND177 billion ($8.14 million) for his website between August 2012 and September 2014 and wired him over VND152 billion.
Nhat paid VND5 billion ($230,000) a month in rent for 693 servers he hired in France and the Netherlands.
He also paid over VND4.95 billion ($227,000) to four others who were responsible for uploading over 18,000 porn files, according to prosecutors.
