Five people including four children were killed and four others were injured in a fire that broke out at a jewelry shop in the northern tourist town of Ha Long Friday

The blaze started on the first floor of the six-story building at around 2.40 a.m. and soon spread to the other floors, trapping owner Mai Thi Anh's family.

The house was reported to be locked inside.

Anh, 35, and her husband Nguyen Tien Duc, 34, jumped off the first floor and tried to call for help.

But their three children aged six to 11, 10-year-old nephew, and Anh's mother were stuck inside.

It took rescuers about an hour to break into the house and extinguish the fire, but by then the five had died.

Authorities said they had possibly been asphyxiated.

Anh, Duc, Anh's father, and a firefighter sustained injuries.

The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
