5 killed as eroded dyke gives way, taxi slips into river

Five people drowned in a river Monday when a taxi on the way to a wedding fell off a narrow and eroded dyke in northern Vietnam.

Nguyen Van Ky, the 38-year-old driver from Vu Gia Taxi Firm in Hai Phong, was detained for investigation, news website VietNamNet reported.

Ky managed to escape the car after the accident in Hai Duong Province. The accident occurred at around 2 p.m.

The five passengers, ranging between 25 and 49 years of age, also came from Hai Phong. They were going to a wedding party in Hai Duong, 45 kilometers away.

The news site said a similar accident happened on March 3 in Quang Ninh Province also in the north, when a taxi cab with five people lost control and plunged into a river. Two people were killed.
