5 dead, 8 hurt in central Vietnam bus-truck collision

The bus and container truck that collided head-on in Thua Thien Hue Province on Tuesday.

At least five people were killed and eight others critically injured when a bus collided head-on with a container truck on Tuesday in Thua Thien Hue Province.

The accident happened at around 1 p.m. on National Highway 1A in Phong Dien District's Phong An Commune.

The Khanh Truyen Company bus was heading northward after departing from the province's Hue Town, 30 kilometers from the crash site.

The collision smashed the front of the bus and caused both vehicles to tumble off the road and into a field.

Three people, including the bus driver, were killed on the spot, another died en route to the hospital and the other died after being hospitalized. The deceased are being held in the morgue at Thua Thien Hue General Hospital until they can be identified.

The eight injured people were admitted to Hue Central Hospital and Northern Thua Thien Hue Hospital.

The accident held up traffic, with vehicles backed up for two kilometers. Traffic police soon remedied the situation.

Pham Van Thai, the province's chief traffic police officer was quoted by Tuoi Tre as saying that preliminary investigations found the container truck had been traveling on the wrong side of the road when the crash took place.

Police are investigating further.
