Two children in Da Nang drowned Tuesday after falling into an unfenced ditch dug by the contractor of local dyke on the coast.
The children were cousins, both four years old. One of them had a twin brother who did not slip into the ditch as the three of them were playing near the beach.
Local police said the ditch more than 100 meters long and two meters deep was dug by the local An Phu Joint Stock Company many months ago, but the company never bothered to fence it.
The company's dyke project, worth nearly VND30 billion (US$1.54 million), was supposed to be put in use in August 2008 but work has been dragging on until now.
Local authorities have given the families of the children ex-gratia payments of VND4 million and 50 kilograms of rice.
In June, two children aged 12 drowned after falling into an uncovered hole dug by the Da Nang Urban Construction and Investment Joint Stock Company for a sewer project.
