Police in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho have asked local prosecutors to indict four men for a VND3 billion (US$140,800) meteorite scam.
Tran Van Phuong, Vi Xuan Uyen, Tran Van Ngoc and Nguyen Van Doan were arrested after a victim contacted the police, Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.
Police say Phuong masterminded the scheme which convinced people to serve as middlemen in a scheme to sell meteorites for millions of dollars.
The group first approached Tran Ba Lua, Uyen’s college friend, who enlisted Nguyen Thanh Luot.
Ngoc sold Luot a 1.3 kilogram rock and claimed it was worth VND260 billion ($12.2 million).
Uyen told her his company wished to buy the meteorite for $82 million a kilogram.
After she forked over a VND2.9 billion advance, the gang ran way with Luot’s money, prompting her to file a complaint.
The gang returned more than VND1.5 billion after she notified police who found the gang had cheated another man VND140 million in the same fashion.
