Four members of a family were killed and three injured Wednesday after a train hit the car at a railway crossing in the central province of Quang Ngai.
The seven-seater Toyota Innova, driven by Le Thanh Ha, 44, was carrying six family members from Ho Chi Minh City to Quang Ngai when the accident happened in Tu Nghia District at around 12:55 p.m.
According to eyewitnesses, Ha previously ignored a roadside light signaling the train was coming and tried to accelerate and drive the car past the railway crossing.
The train crashed into the car's side and dragged it for some distance.
The four people who died are: Nguyen Di, the 45-year-old car owner, his daughter Nguyen Thi Sa Ly, her boyfriend named Luc, and Di's nephew Nguyen Thanh Tuan.
The three inured victims are: Nguyen Thi Sa Ny, Ly's older sister, her boyfriend Le Van Tien and car driver Ha. Ny is reportedly in critical condition.
At the time of the accident, Di and his family were heading for their hometown in Quang Ngai Province's Nghia Hanh District to attend a ceremony marking his wife's third death anniversary.
After being treated at the Quang Ngai General Hospital, Ha fled in the evening.
Local police are investigating the accident.
