The Vietnam Construction and Import-Export Joint Stock Corp. Saturday inaugurated the Cua Dat irrigation-hydropower plant in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa.
Located in Thuong Xuan District's Xuan My Commune, Cua Dat is one of the country's biggest irrigation-hydropower facilities with a total investment of nearly VND7 trillion (US$360 million).
With a water reservoir able to store 1.5 billion cubic meters, Cua Dat is expcted to reduce flooding in low-lying areas along the Chu and Ma rivers and irrigate more than 86,000 hectares of farm land.
The plant will also supply water for local residents' daily activities and for industrial production.
In addition, Cua Dat will generate around 430 million Kwh of power every year for the national grid.
Also on Saturday, the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development started construction of a VND4.3 billion canal that will automatically irrigate 31,000 hectares of farmland in five districts in Thanh Hoa with water from the Cua Dat reservoir.
