35 saved from bus wreck in central Vietnam

Authorities say that 35 people have been rescued after their bus plunged into a ditch in the central province of Phu Yen on Tuesday.

The rescue effort was overseen by Ha Trung Khang, chairman of the Phu Hoa District's People's Committee, who said that most of the passengers were rushed to the Phu Yen Province General Hospital and Phu Hoa District General Hospital.

As of Wednesday morning, only two remained hospitalized, in stable condition, he said.

Khang added that the authorities had yet to confirm the number of passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.

However, he ordered a halt to the seach for missing victims on Wednesday after based on the fact that no bodies had been found.

Do Thi Thuy Linh, the bus' ticket collector, said there were nearly 50 passengers onboard. However, Driver Pham Minh Dung claimed there were only between 30-40.

Dung told police that he had lost control of the vehicle, causing it to careen into a ditch.
