A group of college students from Hanoi doing their internship in nearby Thai Nguyen Province were brutally attacked by a group of thugs in their dorm on their very first night there.
News website VnExpress said the 32 students from the Industrial Economic And Technology College were attacked on the night of January 7.
The parents of one student, Thai Duy Manh, 20, went from Hanoi and took him to St. Paul's Hospital in the capital city at around 1 a.m. after being informed by his classmates that he was beat up.
He was the only one with severe injures after failing to flee. He managed to run out of the room, but several of the attackers hit him with iron rods and he fell down the stairs.
They threatened to kill him if he told the police.
Manh said: "The attackers smelled of alcohol. They did not say anything, just damaged the furniture and hit us."
He needed an operation to remove blood clots in his brain. He was also bruised all over his face, arms, and legs.
Many of the other students also left for Hanoi the same night.
They had been staying in their school's main campus in Pho Yen District.
Hoang Thuy Hang, one of the victims, said the 16 boys and 16 girls had been put in two different rooms in the dormitory.
They had arrived at around 10 p.m. and soon more than 20 strangers came and knocked on their doors.
Hang said the girls did not open, so they went to the boys' room across the corridor and kicked the door down.
The attack lasted 15 minutes and the police came 10 minutes after the thugs left.
The campus has three security guards, but they are old and did not dare intervene.
One of the students said the attackers spoke with a central accent.
Hang said: "The school authorities ordered us not to leave and threatened to expel us. But we were scared after being attacked immediately upon arrival, so none of us stayed."
The police are investigating. They said initial investigations suggested the attack could have been carried out by some other students living in the dormitory.
