Forty of 93 inmates at a drug rehabilitation center in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai climbed over a high wall and concertina wire to escape on Thursday.
The escape reportedly occurred at the Center for Medical Treatment, Education and Social Work in Pleiku City shortly after lunch.
Local police were sent to the site to apprehend the drug addicts, who ran in different directions.
The inmates’ families were informed of the escape.
By afternoon, nine inmates were brought back to the center (by police officers) or to their homes (by their families).
The remaining inmates’ whereabouts remain unknown.
Local authorities have issued a public announcement of the escape and encouraged relatives to help convince them to go back to rehab.
This is the second mass escape in the center's history, they said, without elaborating.
