Police in Thanh Hoa Province Saturday arrested three young men including two teenagers for allegedly stabbing a man and stealing his motorbike to fund their online-games addiction.
Nguyen Van Thien, 17, Le Van Thanh, 19, and Nguyen Tien Hung, 21, belong to Vinh Hoa commune in the province's Vinh Loc District.
The police said the three stopped Mai Van Tien from a nearby commune at around 9 p.m. on November 14, stabbed him, and grabbed his vehicle. Some passers-by took Tien to the hospital.
The three later confessed to mortgaging the bike at a pawn shop in Thanh Hoa Town for VND4.5 million.
They were arrested in Vinh Loc while looking for potential victims, the police said, and confessed they needed money to play online games.
The media has been reporting about the increasing number of crimes committed by people looking for money to play these games.
According to a report from US-based Pearl Research, the number of gamers in Vietnam and India will exceed 25 million by 2014, thanks to their growing economies and increasing number of Internet users.
Pearl said more than 50 online games are available in Vietnam, a significant number considering the country's online game market just began gaining traction in 2004. Some top online games have up to 200,000 users.
