Police in Ho Chi Minh City have put out a warrant for three men accused of stealing more than US$750,000 from a local by lying that they could help her family gain US citizenship.
Tran Van Tam, Ta Van Thao and Nguyen Thanh Tri approached the woman in October 2015, introducing themselves as officers at the Ministry of Public Security, the woman said in her complaint.
She said she was convinced as they always showed up in uniform and traveled in cars with sirens.
Tam told her that his group was assigned a special mission and they could help prepare papers for her family to win US citizenship.
They set their price at VND16.8 billion (US$753,648) and asked her not to tell anyone because “it’s national secret.”
But all of them disappeared after she transferred the money in November.
