Three police officers in the southern province of Tay Ninh Monday received suspended sentences for cheating a local man out of VND30 million (US$1,420).

Nguyen Van Lam, chief of Chau Thanh District's inspectorate, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Nhung, an officer, and her husband Nguyen Chi Cong, an officer in the forensic division -- all sacked from the force -- were found guilty of cheating Le Van Gam.

There had been a fatal accident during the construction of Gam's house in May last year, and the trio had convinced him they could get authorities to drop criminal investigation into it.

They simply had information that there would be no such probe.

Following an official communication to Gam in October Lam told Nhung to demand VND30 million from him.

Their scheme was busted four days later when Gam was paying the money to Cong in a café.

The Tay Ninh town People's Court sentenced Lam to 18 months and the other two to a year each.
