Three siblings are presumed to have drowned while bathing in a pond in a rural village in the southern province of Binh Phuoc Wednesday.
Hoang Van Dai, 32, of Phu Van Commune, Bu Gia Map District, said he did not see his children after returning home from work at noon on Wednesday.
Dai and his wife rushed to search for the children. After one hour, they found the dead bodies of their daughters Hoang Thi Hien, 11, and Hoang Thi Hoa, 9, and their son Hoang Van Binh, 7, in the 1.8-meter-deep pond some 200 meters away from their house.
Local police believe the children drowned while bathing in the pond at approximately 11 a.m.
The Department of Child Protection and Care said that around 3,500 children drown in Vietnam every year, and that the number has increased over the years.
Drowning is the second leading cause of death in Vietnam after traffic accidents, it added.
