A court in southern Vietnam on Friday sentenced three police officers to between five and ten years in prison for taking bribes and protecting illegal casinos.
Tran Tuan Linh, 29, head of a local police station in Tay Ninh Province, was given the longest sentence of the three, while his deputy Nguyen Hoang Vinh received five years.
Nguyen Le Viet, the other officer, got seven years.
According to the indictment, the three officers received a total of VND28 million (US$1,400) from some gambling organizers to allow the operation of an illegal casino and a cock fighting pit in the area.
The Tay Ninh court also sentenced 20 others from one year to eight years in jail for organizing illegal gambling activities, bribing, and offering loans at high rates.
