Three police officers died when their coracle sank in a river in the central Vietnamese province of Ha Tinh Thursday though they were known to be capable swimmers.
According to preliminary information, Nguyen Van Hung, 26, Nguyen Van Thuan, 21, and Tran The Dai, 50, sank some 15 meters from the bank of the Ngan Sau River.
Newswire Vietnamnet quoted Nguyen Thanh Son, secretary of the Vu Quang District Party unit, as saying that they were returning from an investigation into a theft.
"They could all swim well, so people do not know why they drowned," he said.
Their bodies have been retrieved and sent to their families, and an investigation has begun into the accident.
