Three members of a family drowned after falling off a boat in rough weather just off an estuary in the central province of Quang Ngai Sunday.

Rescuers found the bodies of Vo Van Hung, 56, his daughter Vo Thi Tin, 30, around 400 meters from their boat at 2 p.m., around two hours after the accident.

They found his two-year-old granddaughter late that night.

The local police speculated that Hung was taking the two visitors to his house when mother and daughter toppled off the boat and he jumped in to rescue them.

The river is around 100 meters wide at that point but deep and rough since it is at the mouth of an estuary.

Locals said there is a bamboo bridge across the river but authorities remove it during the monsoon to prevent people from being swept away while using it to cross.

There is a road to go to the other side, but it entails a journey of 15 kilometers.

The police are investigating.
