Police in Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho have arrested three people for allegedly robbing two foreign tourists and returned all the properties to the victims.
Huynh Thanh Hoang, 24, rode his motorbike with Tran Thi My Phuong, 37, strolling around District 1 to scour potential targets on Wednesday morning.
According to police accounts, spotting a foreign tourist standing on the sidewalk of Pasteur Street, Phuong stepped down, snatching the tourist’s necklace and running to Hoang’s waiting motorbike in an attempt to flee.
The female tourist then chased after them, trying to grab the motorbike back with her hands, police said.
Local passers-by intervened, helping the Thai woman to arrest the duo and escort them to a police station, where she was returned her robbed property.
On Tuesday, police in Can Tho also arrested Tang Binh Cuong for stealing a cellphone of a Luxembourgish man who was visiting the Mekong Delta city.
Yannis Bastoan was riding his rented bicycle to the Cai Rang floating market and busy with loading his luggage into a touring ship, while Cuong, 33 showed up and pretended to give a hand.
Cuong then surreptitiously stole the cellphone from Yannis’s backpack, police said.
The tourist reported the incident to local police after discovering the theft.
Police arrested Cuong one hour later, giving back the cellphone to Bastoan.
