The Da Nang People's Court Monday handed down jail terms of up to five and a half years to three Malaysian men for using fake credit cards to swindle shop owners out of VND325.7 million (US$15,400) last year.

Wong Kar Wai, 31, Ling Seng Koey, 24, and Chong Kon Hoi, 48, used fake cards to buy goods from 11 electronics and jewelry shops in Da Nang, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City between July and August 2012.

Wong got five and a half years, while Ling and Chong got five and three and a half years respectively.

They were arrested on August 4 when attempting to buy jewelry worth more than VND54 million at Jewelry World in the Indochina Riverside building in Da Nang.

The men carried 60 fake credit cards and two fake passports they received from an unidentified man known only as Kent in Kuala Lumpur before arriving in Vietnam in July last year.
