Inspectors from Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security are investigating allegations that three luxury cars here, including two that cost over US$1 million each, are carrying the same license plate number, an official has told Thanh Nien.
According to Nguyen Kim Hai, who is in charge of the traffic control division under the ministry's road and railway traffic police department, when three cars have the same license plate, "surely" at least two of them are using fake plates.
Earlier it was reported on a couple of newswires and car forums that a black Rolls-Royce Phantom Ghost, a Rolls-Royce Phantom Year of the Dragon 2012, and a white Maybach 62S were all spotted carrying the same plate number: 51A-058.88. Pictures of the cars were also posted online.
A report on VnExpress quoted Ho Chi Minh City police as saying that they granted the plate to the Rolls-Royce Ghost only, which is owned by a businessman in District 10.
Meanwhile, no further details were made available about the cars' locations or their owners.
Car aficionados said the dragon Rolls-Royce Phantom was numbered "01" among the 33 cars that the English car maker produced for the Chinese market this year, also known as the Year of the Dragon Year on the Chinese calendar. Each costs about US$1.2 million.
