Border guards in the north-central province of Quang Tri arrested three Laotian nationals Tuesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin from Laos into Vietnam.
Tua Pau Ha, 63, Thao Van, 52, and Ket Xa May, 25, were arrested near the Lao Bao Border Gate when the trio and another unidentified man were caught carrying 10 brick-shaped packs of heroin weighing 3.5 kilograms in a Laos-registered car.
When the border guards and Laotian police chased after the four, the unidentified man tried to shoot back at police with a pistol.
He then fled into a forest and escaped, leaving the pistol behind.
Police seized the trio along with the pistol, the drugs and the car.
The trio confessed to police they bought the heroin in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, and transported the drugs by car to the Vietnamese border.
They planned to sell the drugs to Vietnamese dealers.
The case is being investigated further.
