Three members of a family died when their car crashed head-on into a truck in the north-central province of Quang Binh Friday.

The deadly accident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on National Highway 1 in Bo Trach District’s Thanh Trach Commune, when Bui Van Hai, 56, of Dong Hoi town, possibly driving in the wrong lane because of fog, collided with a truck driven by Tran Dinh Nhan, 23, of Quang Nam Province.

Hai, his mother Bui Thi Hoa, 81, and son Bui Van Hieu, 12, died on the spot.

His wife Dang Thi Hien, 45, daughter Bui Thi Le Hang, 24, uncle Bui Van Diep, 57, and nephew-in-law Hoang Van Thang, 34, were critically injured and admitted to Vietnam – Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital.

The car's front portion was completely smashed.

An Ninh Thu Do (Capital Security) newspaper reported without providing details that fog had probably caused Hai to drive in the wrong lane, leading to the accident.

The truck and its driver escaped virtually unscathed.

Police are investigating.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted a friend of Hai as saying that the family was returning home after visiting his hometown in the northern province of Phu Tho on February 2, the third day of Lunar New Year.
