Three fishermen were killed and another is missing when their boat, returning from the high seas after hearing about bad weather, was sunk by giant waves a mere kilometer off the central province of Thua Thien Hue Friday.
Five people were on board, but only Ho Van Hien, 43, the captain, who was wearing a life jacket, survived.
The other four went missing.
Two hours later rescuers arrived at the site and picked up Hien and retrieved three bodies.
Pham Thu, 56, was not found.
The boat left for fishing grounds two days ago, but returned after being being informed about bad weather.
When the vessel entered Thuan An estuary, its engine broke down and it was facing the waves broadside and soon sunk, Hien told Tuoi Tre (youth) newspaper.
All of them had been wearing life jackets, but the others took them off to swim easily when they jumped into the water, he said.
The waves shattered the boat and the men got separated, he said.
Rescuers are continuing their efforts to find Thu.
