Three children of a family drowned in a pond in the south central province of Binh Dinh on Saturday.
At around 2 p.m., Lam Thi My Nga, 6, her twin sisters Lam Thi My Tien and Lam Thi My Hau, 4, and her brother Lam Van Dat, 2, went to the pond near their house in a rural village in Hoai An District after their parents left the house to farm in the forest.
Nga allegedly fell into the pond. Upon seeing her struggle in the water, Tien and Dat tried to grab her shirt to save her and fell into the pond.
When Hau rushed out to call for help, Nguyen Van Chau, a 44-year-old neighbor, arrived to find the kids already drowned, according to Tuoi Tre newspaper.
"I saw the bodies of the kids floating in the pond. One of them had turned purple," he said.
Chau said the children may have been dead for 20 minutes.
The pond is around 1.8 meters deep.
According to local residents, the four children of Lam Van Ngoc and Nguyen Thi Trinh were typically left home while their parents farmed.
